Textiles, felts, resins, rubber, and other natural or man-made substances are used to create a material that is applied or fastened to the base surface of a room.
This material serves the purpose of providing comfort, durability, safety, and decoration. It encompasses both handmade and machine-made rugs, carpets, and smooth-
surfaced floor coverings. While the terms "carpet" and "rug" are often used interchangeably to refer to textile floor
coverings, carpets are typically fastened to the floor and cover the entire floor area, whereas rugs are not fastened and rarely cover the entire floor. Carpets and rugs can be categorized as either handmade or machine-made. On the other hand, smooth- surfaced coverings adhere to a subfloor and are manufactured as sheet goods or tiles.
