The planning and ornamental cultivation of gardens, lawns, grounds, parks, and various other types of spaces are essential in garden and landscape design. This practice aims
to improve the surroundings of buildings, public areas, recreational spaces, and parks. Garden and landscape design is considered a form of decorative art that is closely linked to architecture, urban planning, and horticulture. The vegetated landscape that once covered most of the Earth's continents before human development still exists in and around even the largest cities. The efforts to design gardens and preserve green spaces within urban areas are attempts to maintain a connection with the original rural landscape. By filling the open spaces in cities, gardens and designed landscapes create a seamless transition between the structured urban environment and the open rural surroundings. Additionally, gardens and designed landscapes have a unique sense of continuity over time. While buildings, paintings, and sculptures may endure longer than
individual plants, the constant growth and change in vegetation provide a continuous time element that static structures and sculptures cannot replicate.
